For nearly three decades, DeShonda Coleman has dedicated her career to advancing mathematics teaching and learning. She began her journey as a \mathematics educator before transitioning into instructional coaching, supporting teachers in strengthening classroom practice and improving student outcomes.
DeShonda later expanded her leadership experience as a Program Manager at Louisiana State University, followed by roles as an Assistant Principal and School District Supervisor. These experiences provided her with a broader perspective on the systems, structures, and partnerships necessary to support effective mathematics education across classrooms, schools, and districts.
As an entrepreneur, DeShonda has continued this work by consulting with educators, leaders, and organizations committed to improving outcomes for learners. Through coaching, professional learning, data analysis, and strategic planning, she has helped stakeholders use information to make informed instructional decisions that strengthen mathematics outcomes and contribute to overall performance growth.
Despite her leadership experiences, DeShonda continues to support students through individualized mathematics tutoring and ACT preparation, allowing her to remain connected to the needs, strengths, and potential of today’s learners. While mathematics often serves as the starting point, her work with students frequently evolves into conversations about confidence, goal setting, and future possibilities, reflecting her belief that developing the whole learner is just as important as developing mathematical proficiency.
Throughout each stage of her career, one truth remained clear: meaningful growth happens when people learn from one another and have access to the right support, resources, and opportunities.
These experiences led to the creation of MathEdX.

eShonda’s commitment to mathematics education is deeply personal. Inspired by her father, Donald William Alexander, Sr., whose remarkable ability to apply mathematics to everyday life demonstrated both the practicality and power of mathematical thinking, she established the Applied Math Legacy Scholarship.
Presented annually through MathEdX, the scholarship recognizes students who exemplify critical thinking, problem solving, and the ability to apply mathematics with precision and purpose in real-world contexts.
Through this scholarship, DeShonda honors her father’s legacy while investing in future generations of learners. It serves as a reminder that mathematics is more than formulas and procedures. It is a pathway to confidence, opportunity, and possibility.
